Exploration & Production
 |
| This
is a typical drilling rig used to drill
shallow gas wells in Pennsylvania
and New York. These rigs can drill to
a depth of 2,500 feet in two days. Seneca
uses this type of rig for its ongoing
exploration drilling program in Pennsylvania. |
Seneca
operates approximately 2,500 wells located in
western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania.
Currently, Seneca Resources owns approximately
720,000 acres of fee minerals, 270,000 acres of
leased minerals and 100,000 acres of surface and
timber rights throughout the region.
The area, known for its stable, long-life gas
reserves, is the home of the first oil well drilled
by Edwin L. Drake in 1859. Many of the wells in
Seneca’s East Region are also known for
their low cost of operation and have been producing
for over 50 years. Seneca's oldest active producing
well was drilled before 1900. Seneca’s long
term plans include exploring and developing remaining
gas reserves in the region while commodity prices
continue to merit the investment.
Timber
Seneca conducts timber operations
in the Northeast Region. Seneca owns approximately
100,000 acres of timber property in Pennsylvania
and New York. Highland Forest Resources, Inc.
(Highland), a wholly owned subsidiary of National
Fuel Gas Company, owns and operates 2 sawmills
in Pennsylvania. The world-renowned Pennsylvania
hardwoods are harvested from Seneca's timber acreage
and either processed through one of Highland's
mills or sold as high-quality veneer logs or export
logs.
