Pipeline & Storage

CP11-512-000 Line N 2012 Expansion Project

On March 29, 2012, National Fuel Gas Supply Corporation, the Pipeline and Storage segment of National Fuel Gas Company, received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) at Docket Number CP11-512-000, to construct 4.85 miles of new 24-inch pipeline along with added compression and related facilities in Washington County, Pennsylvania.

On October 3, 2012, initial facilities were placed into service, and National Fuel commenced service for one of its project shippers. The initial facilities include the 4.85 mile 24-inch diameter segment of Line N, four road crossings and one new 10,310 hp turbine at the existing Buffalo Compressor Station.

The Line N 2012 Expansion Project (the Project) in its entirety, included the construction of approximately 4.85 miles of 24-inch pipeline parallel to National Fuel's existing 20-inch Line N; the installation of an additional 20,620 horsepower of compression via the construction of two additional compression units at National Fuel's existing Buffalo Compressor Station; the installation of several segments of National Fuel's existing Line N at four road crossings; and the conversion of approximately 4.85 miles of National Fuel's existing Line N and four road crossings in Washington County to inactive status for possible future use. The Project will enable National Fuel to transport additional capacity and will improve the reliability of the existing pipeline system, which transports natural gas from the Appalachian region to markets throughout the northeast.

Company representatives initially surveyed the property on the proposed pipeline route. These surveys provided the data needed to determine the most suitable route for this pipeline project. Factors used in making this determination included, but were not limited to: environmental or archeological sensitivity, the presence of threatened and endangered species, pipeline engineering issues, site conditions (including locations of buildings, drain tiles, wells and other natural and manmade features), geological conditions and cost.

Affected property owners were offered fair compensation for the use of their land and for temporary economic loss caused by construction. Historically, the presence of a natural gas pipeline, which is buried a minimum of three feet underground, has not reduced property values. In addition, National Fuel is committed to restoring the areas affected during construction to original or better condition, and allowing the continued use of the land for agricultural and recreational purposes.

More information about landowners' rights and ways to become involved in this process can be found on FERC's website: http://www.ferc.gov/for-citizens/get-involved.asp
